Expanding Pharmacy Personnel Scope of Practice to Increase Adult Pneumococcal Vaccination Coverage Rates at a State-level

November 2021

Previous research has demonstrated that increasing scope of practice for pharmacists has been shown to have an impact on vaccine coverage rates. However, it has yet to be explored if there is an association between vaccine coverage rates and other personnel within the pharmacy, such as pharmacy technicians, students, and interns. Therefore, Discern Health, Real Chemistry’s Real-world Data Team, and Merck have been collaborating to understand the association between state-level scope of practice laws for pharmacy personnel and vaccine coverage rates.

Preliminary insights highlight that allowing pharmacy personnel to vaccinate could help support vaccination improvement efforts. Merck recently presented a poster showcasing this work during the 15th annual Vaccines Congress, which occurred October 4-6, 2021. The poster and presentation can be viewed on-demand by registering for the conference or accessed through the below PDF.
